In case you are not following the news, California has been devastated by fires once again. Many lives have been lost, and countless others are left grappling with loss and devastation. Fire has always hit close to home for me. When I was about nine, my house caught on fire. Within a matter of hours, my world was turned upside down. My room was burned to the ground, and I lost all of my clothes, school uniforms—everything.
Hearing about the California fires brought back those memories. It made me reflect on what truly matters when everything you think you need is stripped away. This reflection led to a meaningful conversation during our latest Sip and Chat gathering. Together, we talked about family, being a good parent, faith, core values, and community.
All of these things are important and precious, but I’ve learned that they can also be shaken. Family members pass away. Parenting can feel uncertain in challenging times. Faith that isn’t grounded in Christ can waver. These fires, both literal and figurative, remind us of what truly endures when everything else falls apart.
Through my experiences, I’ve come to realize that there is one thing that can never be taken away from me: my salvation. The promise of eternal life is unshakable and guaranteed. No matter what happens in this life, I hold onto that hope.
The time is now to search for what truly grounds you. Life will not necessarily become easier—in fact, challenges may increase—but the peace that comes from a relationship with Christ is unmatched. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to seek Him, to know Him, and to walk with Him. Start with a prayer, read His word, and open your heart to the hope He offers. Let us hold onto what truly matters in the face of life’s fires.
